"And there was also a superscription over him, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of the malefactors that were hanged railed on him, saying, Art not thou the Christ? save thyself and us." — Luke 23:38-39 (ASV)

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of the malefactors who were hanged railed on him, saying, If you are Christ, save yourself and us.

Poor man; even though he is dying a felon's death, he must go along with the multitude, he must follow the fashion, so strong, so powerful, is the popular current among all humankind.
