SCRIPTURE

"Ah! what have we to do with thee, Jesus thou Nazarene? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God." — Luke 4:34 (ASV)

Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are, the Holy One of God.

That is an old trick of the devil, to acknowledge the excellence of the Preacher so that he may avoid the personal application of the sermon; and there are many people, who are quite satisfied when they have said concerning the Word which they have heard, "Yes, it was all true, and it was very well put." But that is not the purpose of a true minister of the gospel — simply to win the compliment of your approval; he wants to see the devil cast out of you, and to stir up your hearts so that you will no longer let religion alone, but will flee to Christ to save you.
