SCRIPTURE

"And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered abroad. Howbeit, after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee. But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I." — Mark 14:27-29 (ASV)

And Jesus said to them, You all shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. But after I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. But Peter said to him, Although all shall be offended, yet I will not.

There was love in that utterance, and so far it was commendable; but there was also much self-trust in it, and even great presumption, for Peter even dared to contradict his Master to his face; and at the same time, he contradicted the inspired Scripture, for Jesus had told the disciples that it was written that the sheep should be scattered. Yet Peter boldly denied both what God had written and what Christ had said. Alas! There is no evil that proud self-confidence will not make us do. God save us from such a spirit as that!
