SCRIPTURE

"Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit." — Matthew 1:18 (ASV)

A word or two was sufficient to describe the birth of all the kings whose names we have read, but for our Lord Jesus Christ, there is much more to be said. The evangelist prepares himself for his solemn duty and writes, Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise. This is a deep, mysterious, and delicate subject, more fitting for reverent faith than for speculative curiosity.

The Holy Spirit formed in the chosen virgin the body of our Lord. There was no other way for Him to be born, for if He had a sinful father, how could He have possessed a sinless nature? He was born of a woman, so that He might be human, but not by a man, so that He might not be sinful. See how the Holy Spirit cooperates in the work of our redemption by preparing the body of our Lord!
