Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"And the disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so many loaves in a desert place as to fill so great a multitude?" — Matthew 15:33 (ASV)
On this second occasion, we might have hoped for better things from the disciples, but they are in the old rut, as doubtful as ever and just as guilty of forgetting their Lord’s power. He said, “I will not send them away fasting,” and they answer His gracious declaration with a hard and chilling question.
Note how they forget what HE would do and dwell on what they cannot do. “From where should we have so much bread?” Who said anything about “We”?
The only good point in their speech is their associating themselves with their Lord at all, but even there they take too prominent a place. They think of their own poverty, of the wilderness, of the “so much bread,” and of the “so great a multitude,” and they forget their “so great” Lord.
Are we not too much like them? Are we sure that we are even as wise as they were? We are afraid not.
