Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"Now in the morning as he returned to the city, he hungered." — Matthew 21:18 (ASV)
He hungered. Wonderful words! The Lord of heaven hungered!
We cannot imagine that His kind hosts had neglected to provide for Him; He was probably so absorbed in thought that He forgot to eat bread. It may be that, according to His custom, He had risen in the morning while all others in the house were still sleeping to hold communion in private with His Father and receive strength from heaven for the work that lay before Him. At least, this was not an unusual thing for Him.
He returned into the city. He did not shirk the work which He still had to do, but this time the King came hungering to His capital. He was about to begin a long day’s work without breaking His fast, yet His hand had fed thousands at one time. Surely all heaven and earth will be eager to wait upon His need.
