Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"And he that falleth on this stone shall be broken to pieces: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust." — Matthew 21:44 (ASV)
Those who stumble over Christ, the chief cornerstone of the Church, are injured. They suffer grievous bruising and breaking, but He remains unhurt. Opposition to Jesus is injury to ourselves.
Those upon whom He falls in wrath are ground to powder, for the results of His anger are overwhelming, fatal, and irretrievable. Oppose Him and you suffer, but when He arises in His might and opposes you, destruction has already come to you.
And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken:
If you stumble over Christ, the chief Corner-stone of God's building, you will be broken in pieces. If you reject him, you shall suffer serious loss.
But on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
If you arouse the wrath of Christ, and the Rock of ages falls on you—a huge cliff comes toppling from its lofty height upon the traveler, and crushes him past all recognition—you will be ground to powder.
