SCRIPTURE

"But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves." — Matthew 25:9 (ASV)

No believer has more grace than he needs; "the wise" virgins had no oil to give away. They gave the best advice they could under the circumstances, although it was of no avail: Go you rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

There is a proper place where the oil can be bought at the right time. We are instructed to buy the truth. Grace is sold in God’s market on Gospel terms, without money and without price, but when the midnight cry is heard, the day of grace has closed and buying and selling are over forever.

But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

It is no easy matter to go and rouse up the seller of oil when the midnight hour has struck. O you who are putting off repentance to a dying bed, you are foolish virgins indeed! Your folly has reached the utmost height. You will have more than enough to do, when you lie there with the death-sweat cold upon your brow, without then having to seek the grace which you are neglecting to obtain today, but which you will value then.
