Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"and they found it not, though many false witnesses came. But afterward came two, and said, This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days." — Matthew 26:60-61 (ASV)
Yes, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none.
At last came two false witnesses, and said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
Brothers, observe that this was a little twisting of Christ's words, but that slight distortion made them as different as possible from what Christ had really said.
I suppose if you want to know how this twisting or distortion is done, any of our general elections will give you the most striking examples of how everything that anyone may say can be twisted to mean the very opposite of what was said. If there is one thing in which English people are expert beyond all others, it is in the art of misquoting, misstating, and misrepresenting.
As our Lord was wronged in this way, no one should be surprised if something similar happens to them. This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
