Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." — Matthew 5:8 (ASV)
Foul hearts make eyes dim toward God. To clear the eye, we must cleanse the heart. Only purity possesses any true understanding of God or any true vision of Him. It is a great reward to be able to see God, and on the other hand, it is a great help toward being pure in heart to have a true sight of the thrice-holy One.
There are no pure hearts on earth unless the Lord has made them so, and no one will see God in heaven who has not been purified by grace while here on earth. Lord, create in me a clean heart, that I may behold You both now and forever!
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
When the heart is washed, the dirt is taken from the mental eye.
The heart that loves God is connected with an understanding that perceives God. There is no way of seeing God until the heart is renewed by sovereign grace. It is not greatness of intellect, but purity of affection that enables us to see God.
For they shall see God.
There is a wonderful connection between hearts and eyes. A man who has the stains of filth on his soul cannot see God, but those who are purified in heart are purified in vision too: they shall see God.
