Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you also that are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." — Romans 1:15-16 (ASV)
Many other people were ashamed of the gospel of Christ. It was too simple; it had not enough of mystery about it; it had not enough of worldly wisdom about it. Paul says, I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, and then gives his reason for not being ashamed of it (Romans 1:16–17).
The gospel tells us about this living by faith, this believing, this receiving righteousness through believing, and not through working.
This is the sweet story of the cross, of which Paul was not ashamed.
