Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"For if, by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; much more shall they that receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, [even] Jesus Christ. So then as through one trespass [the judgment came] unto all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness [the free gift came] unto all men to justification of life." — Romans 5:17-18 (ASV)
Death reigned by one; much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
That is to say, upon the all who are in Christ, as the condemnation came upon the all who were in the first Adam. He who does not believe in Jesus has no part in the free gift unto justification of life; but he who believes is a partaker of the glorious justification which comes by Christ.
Death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. Therefore, as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation, even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. (Romans 5:17–18)
All who are in Christ are justified by Christ, just as all who were in Adam were lost and condemned in Adam. The "alls" are not equal in extent—equal as regards the person in whom the "alls" were found. And this is our hope—that we, being in Christ, are justified because of his righteousness.
