Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"What then? shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye present yourselves [as] servants unto obedience, his servants ye are whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" — Romans 6:15-16 (ASV)
God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
If you are doing the deeds of sin, you are the servants of sin; and only as you are doing the will of God can you claim to be the servant of God. Hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. That becomes the index of our condition. The man, then, who lives in sin and loves it, need not talk about the grace of God; he is a stranger to it, for the mark of those who come under grace is this: that they serve God, and no longer serve sin.
