Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and [the women] said, Is this Naomi?" — Ruth 1:19 (ASV)
They all seemed to gather outside to look at these two strangers, and especially at Naomi, because she was so different from how she had been when she went away. And they said, "Is this Naomi?" Some said, "Is this Naomi?" – questioning. Others said it with surprise, as something incredible, "This Naomi! How can she be the same woman?" It was very rude of them to gather, just as unsympathetic people do on Ramsgate pier, to watch the sick passengers land. Nobody seems to have said, "Come into our house to lodge," but everyone questioned, "Is this Naomi?"
