SCRIPTURE

"He hath put down princes from [their] thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree." — Luke 1:52 (ASV)

The Venerable Bede: The words He has shown strength with his arm, and the preceding words, And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation, should be connected to this verse with only a comma. Indeed, throughout all generations, by the merciful and just administration of divine power, the proud continually fall and the humble are exalted. As it is said, He has put down the mighty from their seat and has exalted the humble and meek.

St. Cyril of Alexandria: The "mighty" in knowledge were the evil spirits, the Devil, the wise of the Gentiles, and the Scribes and Pharisees. Yet God has put these down and has raised up those who humbled themselves under His mighty hand, giving them power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy.

The Jews were also, at one time, puffed up with power, but unbelief destroyed them. In contrast, the humble and lowly among the Gentiles have, through faith, climbed to the highest summit.

Greek Expositors: Our understanding is acknowledged as the judgment seat of God, but after the fall, the powers of evil took their seat in the heart of the first man, as if on their own throne. For this reason, the Lord came to cast out the evil spirits from the seat of our will and to raise up those who were conquered by demons, purging their consciences and making their hearts His own dwelling place.
