"To give knowledge of salvation unto his people In the remission of their sins," — Luke 1:77 (ASV)
Theophylact of Ohrid: He explains how the forerunner prepared the way of the Lord by adding the phrase, To give knowledge of salvation. The Lord Jesus is salvation, but the knowledge of salvation—that is, of Christ—was given through John, who bore witness of Christ.
The Venerable Bede: As if desiring to explain the name of Jesus (that is, the Savior), he frequently makes mention of salvation. But to prevent people from thinking it was a temporal salvation that was promised, he adds the phrase, for the forgiveness of sins.
Theophylact of Ohrid: For He was known to be God in no other way than by having forgiven the sins of His people. For it belongs to God alone to forgive sins.
The Venerable Bede: But the Jews prefer not to receive Christ, but to wait for Antichrist, for they desire to be delivered not from the dominion of sin within, but from the yoke of human bondage without.
