"If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me." — 1 Corinthians 14:11 (ASV)
Paul’s reference to the “languages in the world” and the “foreigner” substantiates the conclusion that in his discussion of tongues he has in mind known foreign languages, which convey meaning by their systematic distinction of sounds. The “meaning” (lit., “power”; GK 1539) of a language refers to its “power” to convey meaning. In v.12 Paul applies these things to the Corinthians. They should major in gifts that will strengthen the church.
