Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God abideth in him, and he in God." — 1 John 4:15 (ASV)
John goes on to state that “anyone” who “acknowledges” (lit., “confesses”; GK 3933) God’s act in his Son is included in the divine fellowship in which the Father is in the believers and the believers in the Father. Initially John connected the fellowship with obedience to the command to love one another (3:24). Then he showed its dependence on the gift of the Spirit (4:13). Here he shows that the fellowship is built on Jesus, who must be acknowledged as being one with the
Father (2:23), as the one who came in the flesh (4:2), and as the Son of God who was sent “to be the Savior of the world” (4:14–15).
