Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"who is one the right hand of God, having gone into heaven; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him." — 1 Peter 3:22 (ASV)
Not only has Christ been raised from the dead, but in his victory he “has gone” into heaven to the place of power and authority (cf. Psalms 110:1; Romans 8:34). “With angels, authorities and powers” now under him, he is the supreme Lord. Therefore, the oppressed Christians in Asia Minor to whom Peter is writing need not fear anyone. Psalms 110:1 speaks of Messiah sitting at God’s right hand “until I [God] make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” So now even the fallen angels are subject to Jesus the Messiah (cf. Romans 8:38–39; 1 Corinthians 15:24ff.).
