"These things command and teach." — 1 Timothy 4:11 (ASV)
Timothy must keep on commanding and teaching the things Paul has been writing about, exercising his authority as pastor. Moreover, he must conduct himself in such a way that no one will look down on him in a condescending way because of his young age. A person could be a “young man” until his fortieth year. Timothy was probably about thirty years old at this time.
On the positive side, he must be “an example” (GK 5596). He is to present the proper image of the Christian and to be a pattern for other believers to follow. This is an awesome responsibility for those who enter the ministry. They must set an example in what they say, in how they live their lives, and in what they believe. The five nouns used at the end of this verse are vital constituents of all Christian living. Carelessness in any one of these areas can spell failure and even disaster.
