Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"If thou put the brethren in mind of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine which thou hast followed [until now]:" — 1 Timothy 4:6 (ASV)
Paul tells Timothy that if he calls the attention of the believers to these truths, he will be a good “minister” (lit., “servant”; GK 1336). To be “a good minister of Christ Jesus” should be the aim of every pastor today. Timothy had been trained or nurtured “in the truths of the faith.” His earliest training was in Judaism, but he had been converted as a young man to Christianity (Acts 16:1–3). He had closely “followed” (GK 4158) its teachings.
