1 Timothy 6:11

SCRIPTURE

"But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness." — 1 Timothy 6:11 (ASV)

In contrast to such people, Paul addresses Timothy as “man of God.” This is a common designation for prophets in the OT (e.g., 1 Samuel 9:6; 1 Kings 12:22; 1 Kings 13:1). There has been much discussion as to whether it carries that connotation here or is used as a general title for all Christians (cf. also 2 Timothy 3:17). In any case, it refers to someone who is in God’s service, represents him, and speaks in his name. “Pursue” means “keep on making [these things] your lifelong pursuit.” Paul then names six Christian virtues.
