1 Timothy 6:19

SCRIPTURE

"laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on the life which is [life] indeed." — 1 Timothy 6:19 (ASV)

By following these instructions the well-to-do will “lay up treasure... as a firm foundation for the coming age.” This is in line with Jesus’ teaching in Mt 6:19–21 about not storing up treasures on earth but storing them up in heaven. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” In place of the uncertainty of earthly riches (v.17), Christians have a “firm foundation” (v.19) of treasure laid up in heaven. The purpose of this is that believers may take hold of “the life that is truly life,” i.e., eternal life.
