"But as God is faithful, our word toward you is not yea and nay." — 2 Corinthians 1:18 (ASV)
Paul is so distressed by this charge and so convinced of his innocence that he solemnly invokes the unquestionable trustworthiness of God (1 Corinthians 1:9; cf. 11:10) as guaranteeing and testifying to the consistency of his message to the Corinthians. Neither in proclaiming the good news to them nor in telling them of his travel plans was his language a blending of “Yes” and “No.” How could the messenger of a faithful God vacillate between a reassuring “Yes” and a disconcerting “No” or deliver a message that was not an emphatic “Yes”?
