Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"And God is able to make all grace abound unto you; that ye, having always all sufficiency in everything, may abound unto every good work:" — 2 Corinthians 9:8 (ASV)
God shows his approval of the cheerful giver (v.7b) in his provision of spiritual grace and material prosperity (“all grace”) that enable this person constantly and generously to dispense both spiritual and material benefits. As regularly as the resources of a cheerful giver are taxed by one’s generous giving, they are replenished by divine grace. This gives that individual “all that you need,” in dependence on an all-sufficient God (cf. Malachi 3:10).
At this point Paul quotes Ps 112 to illustrate the generosity of “the man who fears the LORD” (112:1) and the positive results of one’s giving. From “the wealth and riches... in his house” (112:3a), this God-fearing person freely distributes gifts to the poor (112:9a). As a result, such benevolent acts of piety will never be forgotten but rather will have permanent beneficial effects in this life and will gain one an eternal reward (112:9b).
