2 John 1:12

SCRIPTURE

"Having many things to write unto you, I would not [write them] with paper and ink: but I hope to come unto you, and to speak face to face, that your joy may be made full." — 2 John 1:12 (ASV)

The letter closes with a normal wish. The elder acknowledges that there is much more he might say, but he recognizes that it will be more effective if he were to say it in person (suggested by the phrase “face to face”). When the community of believers enjoys fellowship in Christ, one of the results of their fellowship is the “joy” of the Lord.

The “children” who sent “their greetings” were doubtless members of the elder’s community who understood the plight of the community of the chosen lady; they wished to share John’s concern to strengthen the bonds of love that unite all saints.
