2 Peter 1:12

SCRIPTURE

"Wherefore I shall be ready always to put you in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and are established in the truth which is with [you]." — 2 Peter 1:12 (ASV)

Truth needs to be repeated. The future hope is indeed well known to Christians. Yet to “remind” them of it and to exhort them regarding its application to life and service are essential. “So” links what Peter now says about reminding his readers with his statements about the need for possessing Christian virtues in increasing measure (v.8), participating in the divine nature (v.4), and the eschatological hope (v.11). He knows that they have a settled conviction of “the truth [they] now have.” This statement implies a relatively fixed body of truth (cf.Jude 3), which goes all the way back to the body of recognizable apostolic truth (Acts 2:42). “Firmly established” (GK 5114) picks up the exhortation of Jesus to Simon Peter to “strengthen” (GK 5114) his brothers . Knowing apostolic truth leads to spiritual strength; those who have received this teaching are established. But this does not obviate the need for warnings of spiritual pitfalls, exhortations to pursue truth, and prayer for divine strengthening (1 Peter 5:10).
