Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." — 2 Peter 3:13 (ASV)
Through his prophets God promised righteousness. Jeremiah sees the Righteous One bringing in righteousness, and his name is “The LORD Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:5–7; Jeremiah 33:16; cf. Psalms 9:8; Isaiah 11:4–5; Isaiah 45:8; Daniel 9:24). This promise of righteousness will be fulfilled ultimately in the new heavens and the new earth of which Isaiah spoke (Isaiah 65:17–25) and which Peter refers to here. John also saw “a new heaven and a new earth” in which there was nothing impure (Revelation 21:1, 8, 27).
