Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"For they that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled [them] by condemning [him]." — Acts 13:27 (ASV)
As Paul comes to the heart of his sermon, he appeals respectfully and urgently to both the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles for a hearing. Then he presents a four-point Christian confession like that in 1 Corinthians 15:3–5: (1) Jesus was crucified; (2) they “laid him in a tomb”; (3) “God raised him from the dead”; and (4) “for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem,” who are “now his witnesses to our people.” Also significant is the clear note of fulfillment explicitly sounded in v.27 and implied throughout the whole presentation.
