"Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together." — Acts 19:32 (ASV)

The crowd had been worked up into a frenzy; most didn’t even know why they were there. What united them was a common resentment against those who paid no honor to the goddess Artemis.
