"saying, This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded to you-ward." — Hebrews 9:20 (ASV)

“This is the blood of the covenant” (a quotation from Ex 24:8) is also reminiscent of the words used by Jesus at the Last Supper (Mark 14:24). The phrase “which God has commanded” is highly suitable in the case of a covenant where God lays down the terms. This is no negotiated instrument.
