Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary John 1:30

"This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who is become before me: for he was before me." — John 1:30 (ASV)

This verse is essentially a restatement of v.15, with one significant addition. John calls Jesus “a man who comes after me.” The Greek word for “man” in the verse is the word for “male.” It intimates the headship of Christ over his followers in the sense of the man-woman relationship in marriage.
