Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"Again on the morrow John was standing, and two of his disciples;" — John 1:35 (ASV)
The section immediately following John’s testimony gives the response of Jesus’ first disciples, who came to him largely because of John’s influence. The whole section is tied together by a chronological framework (see comment on v.29), so that the entire episode of John’s introduction of Jesus and the opening of his public ministry is treated as a unit. The previous section dealt with John’s preparatory statement; this second one deals with the initial meeting between Jesus and his potential disciples; and the third one deals with the sign that demonstrated his power and confirmed their faith (2:1–11). The repeated allusion to the Lamb of God focused the attention of John’s disciples on Jesus as the basis for the divine forgiveness of sin and for the assurance that their repentance would be accepted. It stirred their interest and prompted them to investigate who Jesus was.
