"Therefore doth the Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again." — John 10:17 (ASV)

The thrice-repeated allusion to laying down his life (10:11, 15, 17) gives the basis for Jesus’ sacrifice as the means of our reconciliation both to God and to one another (see 1Jn 3:16).
