Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary John 11:20

"Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house." — John 11:20 (ASV)

Martha, the more aggressive sister, went to meet Jesus, while quiet and contemplative Mary stayed home. This portrayal of the sisters agrees with that found in Lk 10:38–42.
