Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary John 13:22

"The disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake." — John 13:22 (ASV)

The announcement startled the disciples. Although Jesus had previously mentioned the betrayal, they had not taken it to heart. Now, realizing the hostility of the authorities in Jerusalem and knowing that Jesus’ death might be imminent, the act that had seemed remote became an immediate possibility.
