Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"Pilate therefore saith unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? Knowest thou not that I have power to release thee, and have power to crucify thee?" — John 19:10 (ASV)
Jesus’ refusal to answer him angered Pilate, whose conceit and arrogance were shown by his question: “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” He was insulted because Jesus had not shown him more deference. Pilate’s assertion of authority seems almost ridiculous in contrast with the weakness and indecision he exhibited in this case. Jesus, who could view the situation in its true light, knew that though Pilate had the legal authority of which he boasted, he was really hampered by political pressures.
