Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary John 20:14

"When she had thus said, she turned herself back, and beholdeth Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus." — John 20:14 (ASV)

As Mary turned back toward the outside of the tomb, she saw a person standing there whom she took for the keeper of the garden. She was aware of his presence, but paid scant attention to him because of her overwhelming concern for the body of Jesus.
