Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary John 4:46

"He came therefore again unto Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum." — John 4:46 (ASV)

Jesus revisits Cana, where he had performed his first miracle (2:1–11). The royal official may have been a member of Herod’s court and possibly a Gentile . His son had been ill for some time and was not recovering from his sickness. Therefore, the father felt compelled to seek further aid.
