Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary John 5:12

"They asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up [thy bed], and walk?" — John 5:12 (ASV)

The paralytic seems to have felt no particular gratitude to Jesus for his healing. He took no responsibility for the action on the Sabbath; and after Jesus had dealt with him the second time, he immediately informed the Jewish leaders who it was that had transgressed the Sabbath law. It seems unlikely that he would have been ignorant of the reason for their inquiry.
