Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"Jesus therefore perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain himself alone." — John 6:15 (ASV)
The desire of the multitude to make Jesus king marks both the height of his popularity and the moment of decision for him. They wanted someone to rule them who would feed them and guarantee their security; they had no comprehension of his spiritual mission or purpose. He, on the other hand, refused to become a political opportunist. He would not promote his kingdom by organizing a revolt against the existing political powers or by promising a dole to all who would join his banner.
