Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary John 6:45

"It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard from the Father, and hath learned, cometh unto me." — John 6:45 (ASV)

Jesus rebuked the people for their grumbling and told them that they would never come to him unless the Father initiated the action. He again spoke of the promise of resurrection for those who belonged to him (cf. v.39). Verse 45 indicates that God will do his drawing through the Scriptures and that those who are obedient to God’s will as revealed in the Scriptures will come to Jesus.
