Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"This is the bread which came down out of heaven: not as the fathers ate, and died; he that eateth this bread shall live for ever." — John 6:58 (ASV)
Jesus climaxed his discourse by once more referring to the “bread that came down from heaven,” the forefathers who ate it in the wilderness and died, and the promise of everlasting life to those who received him (see comments on vv.31–36). Jesus is far greater than Moses, for what he provides satisfies throughout all eternity. Ironically, this conversation took place at “the synagogue in Capernaum.” What better place to promise eternal life than where people gather to seek that very thing through their religion!
