"The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon: who seeketh to kill thee?" — John 7:20 (ASV)

The response of the crowd to Jesus’ accusation shows that the decision of the rulers had not been widely publicized. The people were bewildered by his statement. Curiously, the only allusions in John to demonic activity are accusations made against Jesus (8:48–52; 10:20; cf. Matthew 9:34; Mark 3:22).
