"What is this word that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come?" — John 7:36 (ASV)

The perplexity of the crowd over Jesus’ answer was echoed later by Simon Peter, who, upon hearing him speak similar words, said, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you” (13:37). The crowd could not follow Jesus because of their ignorance of his true identity and purpose; Simon was incapable because he lacked the necessary courage.
