Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary John 8:54

"Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God;" — John 8:54 (ASV)

Again Jesus referred his defense to the Father, for God was responsible for Jesus’ message and vindication. He reminded them that the God they claimed to be theirs was his own personal Father. Their relation to God was formal; his was familial.
