Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"to the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, [be] glory, majesty, dominion and power, before all time, and now, and for evermore. Amen." — Jude 1:25 (ASV)
“To the only God our Savior” points to the monotheistic nature of the faith by showing that the Father is the Savior as well as the Son. Whatever the false teachers may say, there is only one God and Savior. To “God our Savior... through Jesus Christ our Lord” belong four attributes: (1) “glory” (GK 1518), a word with many associations and connotations difficult to capture in a few words—perhaps “radiance” or “moral splendor” comes close to its meaning; (2) “majesty” (GK 3488), which refers to God’s greatness and transcendence; (3) “power” (GK 3197); and (4) “authority” (GK 2026)—the last two words stress his might and the freedom of action God enjoys as Creator. The solemn time notation “before all ages, now and forevermore” indicates that these attributes of God suffer no change and that therefore his divine plan will surely be carried out. Salvation is completely secure because God’s own purpose stands and because he is able to do all that he wills (Isaiah 46:9–10).
