Luke 1:49

SCRIPTURE

"For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name." — Luke 1:49 (ASV)

Mary is in awe of the “Mighty One” whose great power has been exercised in her life. God’s “name” is, according to the common ancient meaning, his whole reputation or character. “Mercy” (GK 1799) expresses an aspect of God’s character sometimes overlooked when his power and holiness are stressed. “Fear” (GK 5828) means here, as often in Scripture, a pious reverence.
