"He that heareth you heareth me; and he that rejecteth you rejecteth me; and he that rejecteth me rejecteth him that sent me." — Luke 10:16 (ASV)

Capernaum had the high privilege of hearing Jesus preach there frequently, but this privilege guaranteed neither its fame nor its survival. On the contrary, in language like that of Isaiah 14:12–15, Jesus graphically portrays Capernaum’s fall. He goes on to iterate that reception or rejection of his messengers demonstrates one’s attitude to the Lord himself (cf. Matthew 25:31–46).
