"from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary: yea, I say unto you, it shall be required of this generation." — Luke 11:51 (ASV)

These verses relate the grim truth behind the parable of the tenants . God’s “wisdom” (v.49) most likely refers to his sovereign wisdom that allows evil people to prosper and good ones to suffer. The Zechariah mentioned here may be either the one mentioned in 2 Chronicles 24:20– 25 or the minor prophet (Zechariah 1:1), though we have no knowledge of the latter one being martyred.
